THE OBJECT OF THE MONTH

PAINTING

Paint, create; paint, express; paint, transform.
“I don’t paint what I see, I paint what I think” Pablo Picasso
It is said that a painter in front of a white canvas can feel panic, the same can be felt by a writer in front of a white sheet of paper or a sculptor in front of a block of marble. And whoever speaks of a sheet of paper, canvas or marble, speaks of any other material. To create is not to fill, it is to empty oneself, it is to create movement and transform whiteness, to give form, to give life. Before starting to paint, the artist does not know what the result of his work will be, he does not know what the outcome will be. Starting and finishing can be the most difficult moments of this creative process.
Painting is not an art, it is how it is painted. Painting has a more expressive than decorative purpose. There are several techniques, pictorial genres, styles and materials. We can paint everything: walls, objects, skin (tattoos), surfaces, vegetal elements, etc. To paint is to leave a mark, it is to transform what we touch.
Painting has therapeutic applications as does music, sculpture, writing … Drawing and painting we can transform states of mind, tensions, … Painting helps us to concentrate, to have new points of view, it educates us, it connects us, it liberates us. In painting we can also find a spiritual dimension.
Painting schools for adults, young people and children are present in many towns, in Calella we can find the Calella Painting Workshop, where Borja Altozano, professor and director, has lent us the exhibited pieces. The classes of plastic arts in the schools are also ideal to experiment, it is surprising to see the creations of very small children, very creative artists.
Colours and tones allow us to play in this creative process. Painting is an art and for many it is a necessity, it is passion, it is communication. It can become a provocation. One can paint landscapes, objects and one can paint feelings, experiences, fears, tensions, … And as we said before, you can paint everything, in a double sense.

When we travel we relate to painting. We can do it by contemplating graffiti, murals, paintings, painted objects, … buying as a souvenir or keeping the impressions of a trip that perhaps we mean to capture in a painting, a poem, a song … Art is expression and transformation and travelling makes live and feel through everything we see and imagine.
